Joe Hill (1879 - 1915), born Joel Emanuel Hägglund, was a labor activist and songwriter. Hill was born Gävle, a city in the province of Gästrikland, Sweden. He emigrated to the United States in 1902, where he changed his name to Joseph Hillström. Later he called himself Joe Hill. After some years he joined the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Hill was executed for murder after a controversial trial, which many charched as unfair.

 

Hill is considered to be one of one of the most influential protest singers i the United States. His parental home in Gävle is now a museum.
